Le Corbusier : "A house is a machine to live in"

Le Corbusier is one of the pioneers of modern architecture. He is a multi-talented architect and urban planner. He is a Swiss-born French citizen. Many parts of the world exhibit his architectural as well as urban planning contributions. The city planning and many governmental buildings in the Punjab province in India were designed by him. His prowess is known for art, furniture design, and writing as well.

His real name is Charles-Édouard Jeanneret. His self-talent, experience, and knowledge of subjects in the field helped him achieve success in architecture and urban planning.

"A house is a machine to live in" - this is Le corbusier's motto. This means that a house, including all its parts, is a machine designed for humans to live in.

His famous five design features for a building are as follows:

1. Pilotis, which are reinforced concrete columns, help elevate a building above the ground. The space created by this elevation can be utilized for various purposes, including car parking.

2. In a Ground Plan, since the columns take on the responsibility of load-bearing, there is no need for load-bearing walls. Therefore, interior space can be designed according to anyone's wishes without any restrictions. This allows for the design of a free open plan.

3. Similar to the free open plan of the interior, a free design of the facade becomes a possibility. Even the exterior of a building can also be designed without considering load-bearing issues.

4. Since walls are relieved from load-bearing, long horizontal windows can be designed, increasing the aesthetic beauty of the building. The interior of a building can get more sunlight due to the long horizontal windows.

5.Instead of sloped roofs, flat concrete roofs allow for roof gardens. This enables the restoration of some of the lost nature caused by the building.

A perfect example of Le Corbusier's architecture is Villa Savoye, displaying the international architectural style in Paris.
