Poem: Kuruman Kaadu! by V. N. Giritharan

 * (Illustration – AI. Kuruman Kaadu was once a small village in Vavuniya, Sri Lanka. Today, it has become a town.)

The Kuruman Kaadu I hold in memory
is not the one that exists today.
It now seems like a dream world.
At times, I even wonder—
did it really exist?
But alongside that doubt,
I also feel—
there's no need for such questions.
Whether it existed or not
is not important to me.
The memories of it
still stir within my feelings.
Those are what matter.

Did not the mighty dinosaurs
once rule the Earth?
We have never seen them.
We never will, will we?
Yet their footprints
remain buried in this soil.
Likewise, Kuruman Kaadu
lies buried in the footprints of my memory.
From those traces, now and then,
it comes alive again. That’s enough.
That’s more than enough for me.

Kuruman Kaadu—
was filled with trees.
Kuruman Kaadu—
rang with birdsong.
Kuruman Kaadu—
echoed with the wanderings of monkeys.
Bathed in nature’s lullaby,
Kuruman Kaadu
lay in peaceful slumber.
To lull my mind,
to soothe my soul,
Kuruman Kaadu
still offers its comfort.
That is a great blessing.

The river of time flows
with loss—
yet it flows, leaving behind
its traces too.
In the moments I spent
within Kuruman Kaadu,
the night sky revealed to me a truth:
Even in the dark,
time leaves its footprints.
For the first time,
I felt that truth
through the glow of stars.

Kuruman Kaadu
taught me many things.
The nights there
first taught me science.
I will never forget them.
I remember them with gratitude.
And I always will.
