The songs sung by the ‘Baila’ king, Desmond de Silva, always remain evergreen memories in our hearts.
Particularly memorable is the lively baila number “Suda Mani Kebala.”

Baila is a musical form introduced to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese — a genre that continues to live vibrantly even today.
This song fills anyone who listens to it with cheer, making them spring up and dance with joy.

That’s exactly how it made us dance during our University of Moratuwa days. In those days, during various university festivities and excursions, this song was one that invariably echoed through the night.

Desmond de Silva was born on July 13, 1944, in Matara, southern Sri Lanka. He gained fame singing with various bands and later formed his own musical group. He performed in many countries across the world.

He was also a singer who raised his voice on behalf of people with autism, a developmental neurological condition, even organizing a concert in Colombo to support them.

As a film playback singer, a baila musician, and a social activist, Desmond de Silva lives on in people’s hearts through his songs. He was truly the King of Baila.

In his later years, he lived in Australia with his third wife and passed away from a heart attack on January 9, 2022.
