About the Sri Lankan Political Situation!

This is my personal opinion. The government led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake today represents the class of the majority of people, different from the elite class that has ruled Sri Lanka until now. It is a government that has obtained a two-thirds majority in Parliament, a clear majority. Not only that, for the first time, whenever racist, religious, and linguistic politicians who lost elections in southern Sri Lanka tried to use those arguments for their self-interest, this government has consistently and strongly voiced against racism, religious extremism, and linguistic chauvinism, nipping their efforts in the bud. This trend is a healthy one, absent in any government that has ruled Sri Lanka until now. We should all welcome it and support them in this matter. If we act in support of the racist forces opposing the Anura government at such times, it would be equivalent to digging our own graves.

Furthermore, a significant aspect that I particularly like is that the members of the National People's Power, the core strength of this government, and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) organization, are mostly politically educated and ideologically nurtured. They are led by university-educated individuals who have rallied to fight for the economic liberation of the people. They are not heirs of traditional political dynasties. This too is a healthy aspect.

Recently, when the issue of the Buddha statue arose in Trincomalee and in the North, they responded very calmly. When such issues are raised, many of our people immediately label them as "Buddhist chauvinists." These people also raise their voices against the government for their political interests. This should be avoided. Raising a voice for rights is different. Shouting along with opposition parties at such times is different.

We must first understand one thing: the majority community in this country is the Sinhala community. The current government of Anura is a government elected by and from that community. In this situation, it is natural for the Anura government to consider and respect the social and political sentiments of that community. It is natural. The Anura government and its associated social and political interests will have certain compulsions and limitations. These are unavoidable. The important thing is whether they are free from racist, religious, and linguistic bases. If they are not, it is essential to point them out.

At the same time, it is crucial that from the President down to the ministers, the Anura government is very clearly vocalizing that there is no more room for racial, religious, and linguistic politics, preventing the cunning politics of southern Sri Lankan racists from succeeding. This is a very necessary first step for resolving the problems of all communities in this country in the future.

Next, the law must apply equally to everyone. The President and ministers are also emphasizing this and have been implementing it to some extent. They have reiterated it even in the current situation. That is also important. They are actively working against corruption and drugs. That is also one of the healthy aspects.

However, humans are not Mahatmas. Parties are also not 100% pure or idealistic. It is natural for mistakes to occur occasionally. It is also unavoidable that they are related to their political interests. It is not healthy for these to be exaggerated and distorted by opposition parties and propagated among the people. Getting caught up in such efforts should be avoided.

Therefore, in the current situation, the stable existence of the National People's Power government led by Anura is good for everyone. The shortcomings of the Anura government should be pointed out. Such an opportunity is rare, and it has come. Let us use it constructively for the benefit of all communities.
