A Timeless Melody: 'Irandu Manam Vendum'!

One of the first films that comes to mind among Nadigar Thilagam's (Sivaji Ganesan's) movies is 'Vasantha Maaligai'. For me, this film is one of those time capsules that transport me back to my teenage years. All the songs in this movie are timeless melodies. They are songs that showcase the talent of K.V.Mahadevan known as Thirai Isai Thilagam.

'Vasantha Maaligai' was produced by Vijaya Suresh Combines starring Sivaji. It was a huge success in Sri Lanka. I recall it ran for over 200 days in Wellington and Capital cinemas. During that period, a rumor also circulated that Gunaratnam, the owner of Wellington and Capital theaters at the time, had co-produced the film with Vijaya Suresh Combines. I don't know how true that is.

Although the film was released in various languages, it can be said that 'Vasantha Maaligai' released in Tamil, with Nadigar Thilagam's performance, received the most acclaim.

Four songs in this film were sung by T.M. Soundararajan for Sivaji. These songs were crafted as if Nadigar Thilagam himself was singing in his own voice. The experience-laden lyrics by poet Kannadasan are unforgettable. When thinking about T.M.S.'s songs for Sivaji, the songs from 'Vasantha Maaligai' are among the first that come to mind.

Many of the songs in 'Vasantha Maaligai' are about love. Poet Kannadasan would have written captivating and excellent lyrics expressing the glory of love and the pain of separation. For example, listen to the poet's song 'Irandu Manam Vendum' (I Need Two Hearts). This song reveals the poet's poetic creativity line by line

I consider this one of poet Kannadasan's finest songs. Love is a very important emotion among human feelings. Not everyone who loves always succeeds. But whether in victory or defeat in love, the psychological impacts humans experience due to feelings of love are the same. The protagonist, experiencing a temporary separation in love, suffers, unable to forget or remember his beloved due to this separation. While there are many dualities in this world like night/day, joy/sorrow, union/separation, his heart yearns for how sweet it would be if human hearts were also like that. If it were so, he could forget his beloved, his separated love, with one heart; and with the other heart, he could remember her with love. But he only has one heart. He agonizes over what he can possibly do. His anguish was wonderfully born from poet Kannadasan as an immortal melody.
