Udhayanidhi vs. Vijay: The Beginning of a New Rivalry
When the DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu many years ago, its members were young. At that time, the young DMK cadres launched a storm of ideas through writings, public speeches, films, and dramas, promoting rationalism, social justice, and self-respect. The youth of Tamil Nadu rallied behind them, and the people of Tamil Nadu brought about a major political transformation.
Since then, many of those same DMK members have grown old, and the party today includes numerous ministers who are well into their old age. In this election, however, the youth of Tamil Nadu have brought about a change in government. The people have not given the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) an overwhelming victory. Nor does it appear that they possess a firm or deeply confident belief in the party. It seems that, by giving it only a partial victory, they have chosen to grant it an opportunity to prove itself.
Even in Chennai, traditionally considered a DMK stronghold, the electorate defeated many of the old guard while ensuring the victory of the younger Udhayanidhi Stalin.
TVK, which came to power without presenting any substantially new ideological framework and largely by invoking the names of Periyar, Anna, and Ambedkar, appears to have understood one thing clearly. As long as three major parties continue to compete in Tamil Nadu, achieving a decisive majority will remain difficult. Therefore, if TVK leader Vijay, who has risen as a representative of image-based politics, succeeds in fully merging the AIADMK into his party, Tamil Nadu politics may evolve into a two-sided contest between the DMK and TVK. Such a development would benefit TVK's long-term future. Time will reveal how successful TVK will be in attempting to attract AIADMK figures such as Sengottaiyan into its fold.At the same time, another important development can be observed. Both the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition now represent a new generation. The political rivalry between Vijay and Udhayanidhi has already made Tamil Nadu's political arena far more interesting.
The contrasting personalities of Udhayanidhi Stalin, who represents ideological politics, and Vijay, who represents image-based politics, are particularly noteworthy. Like Kalaignar Karunanidhi, Udhayanidhi is highly skilled at engaging with journalists and responding to questions on the spot. Vijay is unlikely to outperform him in this regard.
In one sense, the election results have provided the DMK with several opportunities to reform itself. Leaders such as Durai Murugan, who have held onto positions of power for a very long time, can now be sidelined to make room for younger leaders. The DMK may never again receive such a favorable opportunity for generational renewal. The speeches of its leader, M.K. Stalin, also seem to reflect this realization.
For years, the DMK was relentlessly criticized on social media. Today, however, it is being discussed in a much healthier manner. I feel that the party's unexpected defeat—particularly the defeat of its leader, Stalin—has generated a degree of sympathy for the DMK. The often-ridiculed conduct of the new government has contributed to this sentiment.
Through his remarks on Sanatana Dharma, Udhayanidhi has attracted attention not only in Tamil Nadu politics but also across North India. This is likely to help shape him into a combative and prominent young political leader.
If Vijay manages to hold his ground in the coming years, Tamil Nadu politics may increasingly resemble a battle between two film heroes, with the people becoming spectators who enjoy a form of political cinema unfolding in the Legislative Assembly. Both Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin are actors. Udhayanidhi's expressive and engaging public demeanor stands in contrast to Vijay's often impassive facial expression, and this is one of Udhayanidhi's strongest personal assets. It will make the political drama playing out on the stage of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly even more compelling to watch. At the same time, it is the AIADMK that is likely to be most affected by this emerging two-sided political contest. The new political environment has created a situation in which the AIADMK must resolve its internal conflicts and unite. Otherwise, it may not be possible to prevent the decline and fragmentation of the great political movement known as the AIADMK, which was built by towering leaders such as M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Jayalalithaa.
