I learned about the passing of actress Sowcar Janaki through Facebook. She is one of my favorite actresses. She excelled at embracing and brilliantly portraying any character assigned to her. Among actresses, she was known for her courage, pride in her talent, and exceptional fluency in English.
Her life itself was an uphill battle ('Ethir Neechal'). Getting divorced at a young age while holding an infant in her arms, she faced life with immense courage, looking ahead and establishing a strong foothold for herself in the Tamil film industry. She acted across many South Indian languages. Even though Telugu was her mother tongue, she remained one of the most celebrated and highly acclaimed actresses in the Tamil cinema world.
She had a subtle facial resemblance to a Japanese or Chinese woman. I remember reading an article she wrote during my student years in the cinema magazine Bommai. She recalled a time when she visited Japan and walked down the street wearing traditional Japanese attire while carrying an umbrella. Mesmerized by her beauty and mistaking her for a local, the Japanese people surrounded her.
Whenever I think of her, one image that vividly comes to mind is her exceptionally youthful appearance as 'Gowri'—the cousin and wife of the protagonist Thanikachalam (played by 'Nadigar Thilagam' Sivaji Ganesan)—in Akilan's novel-based movie Paavai Vilakku. Her rendition of the song "Vetkamaga Irukku" (I feel shy) remains one of the most memorable tracks associated with her.
Sowcar Janaki lived a complete, fulfilling life. Her journey is meant to be celebrated. Let us celebrate it. That alone can—and will—be the most meaningful and complete tribute we can offer her.
