Why did the provincial parliament abruptly close the Ontario Science Centre?

Why did the provincial parliament abruptly close the Ontario Science Centre? I don't understand the government's logic behind this closure. In my view, the main reason for the centre's closure is developers' greed. The Crosstown railway is about to open after many delays. Due to this railway line, the land value around the Science Centre is skyrocketing. If you see what's going on in its proximity, it becomes clear that this is the main reason. IBM Canada (later Celestica) has moved out, and residential construction has been underway for the past few years. Nearby, the Don Valley Golf Course shows signs of future development. Many residential apartments around the centre are likely to meet the same fate in the future. I feel for the poor residents living there.

According to the late Raymond Moriyama, a Canadian architect who designed the centre, it could last over 250 years with proper management (as stated in his letter published in the Toronto Star). The Ontario Science Centre is not just a place to be closed in such a manner. It holds a lot of memories for not only Ontarians but also for millions of people who have visited in the past. For kids, it is a part of their lives that cannot be separated from their memories.

The provincial government’s abrupt closure is so cruel. First of all, it is not in imminent danger until the next snowfall, according to the so-called engineer's report. According to some other reports, the main exhibition center is not in danger for many more years. So, the government did not have to close the facility to the public in this manner. The workers were not given time to say goodbye to their fellow workers. They were not given time to collect their things. The school kids and others were not given a chance to say goodbye to the center, which holds a special place in their hearts.

I also worry about the wildlife living there. The future development of the Don Valley ravine, where the centre is located, will destroy their habitat. The environment of the area should be protected. Even if the Science Centre is relocated elsewhere, the area should not be allowed to be destroyed due to developers' greed.

According to today's Toronto Star, Councillor Josh Matlow, representing Ward 12 Toronto-St. Paul's, will put forward a motion tomorrow to see whether the city can take over running the center. In my view, that would be a good solution. I hope he will succeed in his motion.
